Getcha Own Damn Fries!

Barack Obama

My sources back at my usual Geek stomping grounds tell me that a fair few of you PoliticOlogists may have received a shiny new iPod for your winter holiday of choice.  If you’ve got a bunch of unused gigs just waiting to house tunes, apps and movies, might I suggest that you rock a humble audiobook in the remaining days of winter break?  Trust me on this–one of the best purchases for your new pocket-sized best friend is the audio version of Dreams From My Father by none other than Barack Obama.  Even if you aren’t a big fan of the President’s policies, you’ll probably find something to like in his self-narrated autobiography.

I first encountered Dreams From My Father during the campaign season prior to 2008; I kept Obama in my bag as I traveled from college to college and spent long evenings in bus stations.  I found the autobiography especially honest and candid, and even before I made up my mind, I had to appreciate Obama’s narrative voice.  He was willing to interrogate his own past and evaluate the events that had brought him into the public spotlight–and for that I had to respect him as an author before I came to endorse him as a statesman.

My most complete appreciation for the book, however, came when I listened to it in audio form with Screenology’s Natalie and one of her roommates last year.  We spent time with Obama during final exams and came to rely on his baritone during furious study sessions.  The thoughts on politics and identity were nice, but our favorite slices of Dreams were the sections in which the President narrates his inner-city years, trying his best to recreate an accurate speech pattern for his badass urban self.  This section gave rise to the amazing quote, “I ain’t your bitch!  Getcha own damn fries!”

If hearing Obama say this and other classic lines in his best gangsta-voice appeals to you at all, I recommend Dreams From My Father completely.  If not, I guess you can wait for Obama’s rap album–or rock out with the Ultimate 2009 Mashup.  Either way…get your own damn tunes!
